Mundo Deportivo doesn’t see things going well for Memphis Depay at Atlético Madrid anymore. The attacker was injured in training at the beginning of this week and may be sidelined again for a few weeks. It is the umpteenth time that coach Diego Simeone cannot call on Depay due to injuries. The Spanish sports newspaper is therefore of the opinion that the end is an exercise for the Dutchman.

Depay has suffered no fewer than four muscle injuries in eight months and is now sidelined again with a calf injury. The attacker must miss the Champions League match against Feyenoord next week. “Something that is unfortunately becoming common,” writes Mundo Deportivo. “The situation is untenable and is a burden when it comes to having a competitive squad.”

Since Depay’s debut last January, Atlético has completed 29 matches. The Dutch international was within the lines thirteen times. Of the sixteen games in which he was unable to play, he suffered fourteen injuries. “He has been unavailable more often than not,” is the easy summation that is made in Spain. “An absolute drama.”

Simeone regrets Depay’s absence. “It worries us, because he is a very important player for us. I hope he can often be of value,” the Argentinian said on Wednesday in preparation for the league match against Osasuna. Simeone’s words are reinforced by the statistics. In 453 minutes, Depay has scored 6 times so far: an average of 75 minutes per goal.
