With nine clean sheets in all competitions, Mark Flek, along with Marc-André ter Stegen and Gianluigi Donnarumma, has kept the clear most often in the top five European competitions. Whether these good statistics ensure that he can go to the World Cup in Qatar, is still the question.

Fleks is one of the 39 names that national coach Louis van Gaal included in his pre-selection for the final tournament. Remko Pasveer, Jasper Cillessen, Justin Bijlow and Andries Noppert also have a chance. Which four keepers will eventually go along remains to be seen, partly because Van Gaal said he wanted to take a penalty specialist with him.

Flek is in Germany working on a strong season at his club SC Freiburg. Partly thanks to his good performances, Freiburg is in a good third place. Things are going well in Europe too. His club has not yet lost any points and is therefore the leader in Group G of the Europa League. Last Saturday, Fleks again kept his goal clean in the 2-0 win against Werder Bremen. That was the sixth time this season in the Bundesliga. In Europe he also kept three clears.

Colleagues Ter Stegen and Donnarumma are also doing well. The German kept the win against Athletic Bilbao for the ninth time in LaLiga last Sunday evening. He only needed eleven duels for that: a record. Things are not going well for him in Europe. In the Champions League he had to fish seven times and was unable to keep his goal clean once. In all competitions, Donnarumma also kept nine clean sheets. In Ligue 1, he only conceded five goals in total with his club Paris Saint-Germain.
