Manchester City have already handed Manchester United their fourth defeat in the Premier League in less than a month and a half. The team of manager Josep Guardiola was too strong for Saturday with 0-2 the Mancunians, who have only four points from their last six league matches. It is the first time since March 2014, when led by David Moyes, that Manchester United have lost two home games in a row in the Premier League without scoring themselves. Donny van de Beek came in as a replacement for Fred ten minutes before the end.

After the half-time signal sounded, a hefty whistle concert descended on the heads of the Manchester United players. As in the painful 0-5 defeat to arch-rival Liverpool, Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s team made a very shaky impression from a defensive point of view, although it was thanks to David de Gea that the home side did not look again at a previously hopeless deficit halfway through. The goalkeeper of the Mancunians made some excellent saves, although he didn’t look good at the 0-2 either.

Manchester United were already behind the scenes from the seventh minute. After a sharp cross from Joao Cancelo from the left, Eric Bailly worked the ball at the near post behind his own goalkeeper: 0-1. Manchester United conceded a goal for the fourteenth home game in a row in all competitions. Only once in history have Manchester United had an extended run of games at Old Trafford without a clean sheet. Between April 1958 and March 1959, the Mancunians 21 home games in a row with at least one goal conceded.

Thanks to De Gea, Manchester United remained somewhat in the game in the first half. He answered attempts by Gabriel Jesus and Kevin De Bruyne and prevented Victor Lindelöf from scoring an own goal. On the stroke of half-time, Manchester City’s second goal, with Nathan Ake on the bench for ninety minutes, appeared on the scoreboard. A turning pass from Cancelo was able to be worked in close by Bernardo Silva at the far post: 0-2.

With the entry of Jadon Sancho for Bailly, Solskjaer opted for a different system after the break, but that had no effect. Manchester City let the fellow townsman come and chose to close the game in the switch. Solskjaer’s team was not really dangerous, except for a shot by Mason Greenwood. Manchester City soon took the initiative and tried to force a third goal through attempts by Ilkay Gundogan and De Bruyne. Fifteen minutes before the end, Manchester United had to deal with a downer when Luke Shaw could no longer continue the game and had to be replaced by Alex Telles.

Van de Beek was brought into the field ten minutes before the end and he almost started the 0-3. After the Dutchman lost the ball, Manchester City came out very quickly and after preparatory work by De Bruyne, a diagonal effort by Phil Foden ended the outside of the post. Manchester United is stuck at seventeen points and is waiting for a visit to low-flyer Watford after the international match. Manchester City are two points away from Chelsea, which still have to play against Burnley. A home game with Everton awaits in two weeks.
