Mitchell van der Gaag is one step closer to employment at Manchester United, Fabrizio Romano reports. The transfer market expert says that Erik ten Hag’s current assistant at Ajax is also seen as an important addition to the staff at the English. The club is working on the final details to confirm the arrival of the fifty-year-old trainer.

Van der Gaag has long been associated with following Ten Hag to Manchester. This is how the Daily Mirror United’s intentions were already known in mid-April. In addition to Van der Gaag, the Red Devils however, want to add another member to the staff of Ten Hag. United would like to appoint someone who has experience at the club. With those criteria in mind, Robin van Persie was previously in the picture, but the former attacker would have doubts about a return to England due to his family life.

Steve McClaren was also named as a candidate for the so-called No. 2 to be at Old Trafford. According to The Telegraph Although Ten Hag spoke to McClaren, the former trainer of the English national team, FC Twente and Newcastle United, among others, has had no contact with the club management of Manchester United. Now it seems that the choice will definitely fall on Van der Gaag.

Van der Gaag ended up at Ajax in 2019, where he started as the person responsible for Young Ajax. Before that, the trainer worked for Marítimo, Belenenses, Ermis Aradippou, FC Eindhoven, Excelsior and NAC Breda. Van der Gaag has been an assistant coach at Ajax’s first team since this season. The collaboration with Ten Hag pleases both sides, which means that Van der Gaag must now also be part of Ten Hag’s staff at United.
