Manchester City has booked a simple victory in the Premier League on Wednesday evening. At the Etihad Stadium, Pep Guardiola’s team received a visit from Southampton, which was beaten 5-2. Kevin De Bruyne managed to score again after a goal drought of ten games: he worked the 1-0 and the 5-2 against the ropes. His previous goal dates from January 3, when the midfielder scored the 0-3 against Chelsea. Remarkably, City has won the last fourteen games the club played on Wednesday, the longest winning streak on that specific day in the history of the league.

City were determined to recover after the club saw an end to their 21-match winning streak in all competitions last weekend against Manchester United (0-2 defeat). Although Southampton bravely sought the attack in the opening stages of the game, they knew the Citizens open the score just before the end of the first quarter of play. Goalkeeper Alex McCarthy initially saved a bet from Phil Foden, but De Bruyne still settled with a shot from the rebound: 1-0.

Southampton, however, did not appear, because halfway through the first half, James Ward-Prowse shot his team at the same level from a penalty, which was awarded after a foul by Aymeric Laporte on Jannik Vestergaard. The opportunistic game of the Saints was punished just before half time, as City found the net twice in eight minutes. The 2-1 came in the name of Riyad Mahrez, who gratefully took advantage of a miserable wide pass from Che Adams and found the bottom left corner with a shot from outside the box. In the injury time of the first act, the home team struck again: this time Ilkay Gundogan gave the last push, just after a shot by Mahrez ricocheted off the post.

Ten minutes after the break, Guardiola’s team ran even further away from Southampton, when Mahrez scored the 4-1 on a pass from Foden. Although the visitors thought they were returning to the game a minute later by a hit by Adams, De Bruyne put an end to all hopes after an hour of play. After a hard play-in pass from the back, Foden laid the leather ready for De Bruyne, who deftly disposed of his opponents and scored convincingly: 5-2. Thanks to the win, City increases the gap with Manchester United, which played one game less than the city rivals, to fourteen points; Southampton occupies the fourteenth place in the ranking.
