Nigeria was surprisingly eliminated from the Africa Cup on Sunday evening. The Super Eagles came out weak against Tunisia and got the lid on the nose when Sparta Rotterdam goalkeeper Maduka Okoye made a mistake with a long shot: 0-1. Everton’s Alex Iwobi then came in for Nigeria and was shown off five minutes later, setting his country on an impossible task.

In the opening phase, Tunisian defender Montassar Talbi was denied a goal with a ball from the line. After that, it was Nigeria that insisted most on a goal, but chances proved very scarce in the first half and there was not a single shot on goal from either side. That changed two minutes after the break, when Youssef Msakni fired on the Nigerian goal from a great distance.

The ball came low on the ground almost straight to Okoye, who got only half a hand behind it and thus allowed a Tunisian goal: 0-1. Nigeria went looking for the equalizer and after an hour brought in player Alex Iwobi, among others. The Everton attacker would remain there for only five minutes, as he was shown red after a VAR check due to a nasty tap on the shins at Msakni.

After a good assumption, Moses Simon had a great chance at the Nigerian equalizer, but goalkeeper Bechir Ben Said intervened well. In injury time, Umar Sadiq had the chance to bring in extra time, but the broken attacker aimed wide.
