Cody Gakpo must focus on a role as number 10 in the Dutch national team. The 23-year-old star player of PSV recently had a conversation with national coach Louis van Gaal in which a lot became clear. Opposite Hans Kraay Jr. van ESPN the Player of the Month for October reveals exactly what the Dutch’s choice lord said.

“He asked me about my preference and that is from the left wing, but in this system Memphis is mainly the left striker. He said I would have little to no chance, because Memphis is playing,” said Gakpo, who also received encouraging words from the bons coach. “Van Gaal said I should be able to play at 10 too. We had a conversation about that. He also put me there against Wales and Poland. I think I should definitely focus on that.”

Ajax player Steven Berghuis seems to be Gakpo’s main competitor in that position. With the Eindhovener as an attacking midfielder, the the Dutch squad managed to beat Wales (3-2), Poland (0-2) and Belgium. In any case, the nine-time international (three goals and two assists) seems certain of a place in the final selection for the World Cup in Qatar. Van Gaal will release the full list next Friday. Gakpo became the Player of the Month in the Eredivisie for the second month in a row last Friday.

It will come as no surprise that Gakpo has been chosen again for that title. The PSV player was good for nine goals and eleven assists in the twelve Eredivisie games he played this season. Gakpo has already been involved in 29 goals in all competitions this season. Ajax player Brian Brobbey was named Johan Cruijff Talent of the Month. He also has a chance of a place in Van Gaal’s final World Cup selection.
