Lionel Messi scored the fastest goal of his career against Australia on Thursday afternoon. He scored after just one minute and nineteen seconds of playing football. The game ended in a 2-0 victory for the world champions. The other goal in the game was scored by central defender Germán Pezzella.

Argentina therefore shot off the starting blocks in the Beijing Workers’ Sports Complex. Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández snatched the ball from Keanu Baccus and handed the ball to Messi. The Argentinian world star dribbled in and shot the ball from twenty meters behind AZ goalie Matthew Ryan. The goal was hit 104 for Messi in Argentine service and thus his fastest ever.

In addition, Messi has broken another personal best. The 35-year-old attacker has now scored in seven consecutive matches for the national team. At the World Cup, for example, he was accurate against Australia, the Netherlands, Croatia and France respectively. Then he scored three goals against Curaçao in March and found the net against Panama. With the goal against Australia, he has now scored seven times in a row for his country, also a record.

The match was decided by Real Betis defender Pezzella in the 68th minute. Rodrigo de Paul crossed the ball into the penalty area, where Pezzella had stuck after a corner. He got the ball perfectly on his head and simply nodded past Ryan. Argentina will take on Indonesia on Monday afternoon. That match is also played for the emperor’s beard.
