Lasse Schöne has been included in Denmark’s roster for the World Cup qualifiers against Israel, Moldova and Austria. With that, the 34-year-old midfielder returns to the Danish national team after an absence of a year and a half. It means that Schöne can also concretely hope for a place in the selection of Denmark for the European Championship next summer, which was a motivation for him to return to the Eredivisie recently.

After his contract with Genoa was terminated after eighteen months of service, Schöne decided to sign with sc Heerenveen. The experienced midfielder has provisionally played seven official games for the Frisians, where he signed a contract until the end of the season. “There is coming a European Championship that I would like to achieve. I also spoke with the national coach. He thought I should go somewhere where I could do my best. I could also have opted for other adventures, but playing football is my top priority, ”said Schöne at his presentation in Heerenveen.

“I feel good and fit, so I am not supposed to stop after the European Championship,” the midfielder said at the same time. Schöne played his last international match for the time being on November 18, 2019, when Denmark drew 1-1 during a European Championship qualifying match on a visit to Ireland. After the midfielder at Genoa slowly but surely disappeared to the reserve bench, national coach Kasper Hjulmand decided not to call him up in the past eighteen months.

Now Schöne can report back to the Danish national team next week, which starts the qualifying cycle for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar with international matches against Israel (March 25, away), Moldova (March 28, home) and Austria (March 31, away). ). Three more players with a history in the Eredivisie have been selected for those duels: Joachim Andersen, Christian Eriksen and Nicolai Boilesen. Feyenoord player Nicolai Jörgensen has not received an invitation, as has ex-Ajax player Kasper Dolberg.
