Everton secured a much-needed victory in the battle against relegation on Sunday afternoon. Precisely against Chelsea, the club where manager Frank Lampard was both player and coach, Everton achieved the three points with a goal from Richarlison. Jordan Pickpord then kept his team going with fantastic goalkeeping work the Toffees with five games left to play on two points from number seventeen Leeds United. However, that has a duel more on the counter, so that Everton can continue to hope for survival.
Everton – Chelsea 1-0
Without the injured Donny van de Beek, Lampard’s eleven started the very tough job to drag in the three points against number three Chelsea (where Hakim Ziyech started on the bench). Both teams were all but able to entertain the crowd at Goodison Park in the first act. The most talked-about moment came from the hosts’ side, when Anthony Gordon fired a low shot into the side net from the right. Thomas Tuchel’s elf offered little in return.
Barely a minute after tea, Richarlison set the stadium ablaze. César Azpilicueta had the ball clumsily snatched by the Brazilian, who saw the ball end up in Demarai Gray’s mess. The attacker returned the ball to colleague Richarlison, who signed for his ninth league goal of the season. Moments later, Vitaliy Mykolenko had a huge opportunity to double the margin. The defender came face to face with Mendy after good work by Abdoulaye Doucouré, but was unable to keep the overview. Then Chelsea took control. Jordan Pickford kept his side going with some fabulous saves, keeping hopes of survival alive at Goodison Park.
