Mason Greenwood made his return to professional football on Sunday afternoon after more than a year and a half. The 21-year-old Englishman is on loan from Manchester United to Getafe this season and made his debut for the Spanish club in the home game against Osasuna (3-2 win). As Greenwood entered the field, the accompanying away fans chanted ‘Greenwood, die’. This action is probably not without consequences.

The Athletic reports that LaLiga plans to punish Osasuna following the chants against Greenwood, who made his first minutes in almost twenty months. An official present at the match heard and noted the chant, prompting an investigation to be launched. It is not known what sanctions are threatened for Osasuna.

In conversation with The Athletic Osasuna coach Jagoba Arrasate responded to the chants. “Greenwood is a player that the legal system has finally dealt with,” the coach begins. “The chants against him are a bad thing. But that also applies to the chants towards Osasuna,” said Arrasate, referring to the Getafe supporters who shouted ‘Fuck Osasuna’ during the match. “When we talk about chants, we have to talk about all chants.”

When the score was 2-2, Greenwood entered the field. With the attacker in line, Getafe pulled off a victory in the final phase. He also had a small part in this, as he earned the corner kick from which Nemanja Maksimovic’s winning goal was scored. The win brings Getafe to seven points from five games in LaLiga, meaning the club currently occupies ninth place.
