Ronald Koeman has provided more clarity about the surprising position of the Netherlands against Scotland. Jeremie Frimpong was expected in the right back position, but the Bayer Leverkusen player has a much more attacking role. “Why Frimpong plays right back? Frimpong does not play right back,” Koeman responds in front of the camera NOS.

“Frimpong is becoming more of a right winger,” Koeman explains. Xavi Simons was initially expected as right striker, but that will be Frimpong's role. “Simons plays on the inside with Georginio Wijnaldum.” The duo must operate in the vicinity of center forward Memphis Depay.

“Cody Gakpo needs to play more from the left up front.” Nathan Aké is the left defender. “We build up with three people.” In addition to Aké, these are Virgil van Dijk and Lutsharel Geertruida.

Koeman expects a very interesting practice match against Scotland. “We knew they would play with five defenders. It could be a fun game with Andrew Robertson against Frimpong.”

Jeroen Stekelenburg concludes: “Is it an asymmetrical team, with a much deeper right side than the left?” Koeman confirms that. “Yes. The left side is filled by a real back, while on the right there is a winger.” On paper, the system seems best described as 3-4-3.

Koeman is asked what he expects from Wijnaldum. “What he has always brought to us. He is still a player who, in my opinion, can play very well from box to box.”

“Wijnaldum will be the first man behind Memphis. He has to get into the box. I'm still looking for that. To be sure whether he can still do that, you have to line him up.”

Netherlands setup: Spots; Geertruida, Van Dijk, Ake; Wieffer, Wijnaldum, Simons, Reijnders; Frimpong, Memphis, Gakpo.

Scotland line-up: Gunn; Patterson, Porteous, Hendry, Robertson, Tierney; Gilmour, McTominay, McGinn, Christie; Shankland.
