Kjell Scherpen got his way just before the closing of the transfer market. The 22-year-old goalkeeper will be kept at KV Oostende by Brighton & Hove Albion for the rest of the season, the number thirteen of the Belgian league confirms. “Kjell is literally a big promise with his 2.04 meters”, says Gauthier Ganaye, the big boss at Ostend.

With his temporary departure to Belgium, Scherpen gets the opportunity to make playing minutes and develop further, which he himself insisted on at Brighton. “Kjell is a boom of a guy, impressive when he’s between the posts,” Ganaye says. “Despite his young age, he has already gained a lot of experience at Ajax and in England and he is one of the emerging talents in Dutch football. It was one of our priorities to bring in a strong extra goalkeeper and his arrival with Kjell we have certainly done that”, concludes the executive president of Ostend in typical Flemish.

Scherpen is liberated by Ostend from England, where the goalie was brought in last summer. Ajax raised no less than five million euros for the Dutch Junior International, who was unable to win the competition with Robert Sánchez at Brighton. Scherpen made his debut for Brighton on January 8 in the FA Cup match against West Bromwich Albion (1-2 win), but that one appearance in the main squad remained for the time being.
