Now that Feyenoord has secured its sixteenth national title in club history, the club can slowly focus on next season. A hot topic is whether or not Arne Slot will stay on. The successful coach can count on a considerable upgrade from the club management, but is also associated with some clubs from abroad. On the podcast Kick off by The Telegraph an advance is already made on a possible departure and two candidate successors are mentioned.

Slot has been associated with Tottenham Hotspur in recent weeks, but according to Marcel van der Kraan, this is not the case. Xabi Alonso (Bayer Leverkusen) would be in pole position to succeed Antonio Conte. “If he (Alonso, ed.) Says no, Slot does have a serious chance. That is also the reason why he keeps putting things off. He knows that Feyenoord wants to continue with him and that the club is doing everything it can to make it even more enjoyable. He may well be the highest-earning manager in club history to date.”

Part of the extra income that Feyenoord has brought in with the title will most likely be used to finance an improved contract for Arne Slot. The team from Rotterdam can start working for the first time in club history next season with a budget of more than a hundred million euros. Through general director Dennis te Kloese, the club says that it wants to do everything it can to keep the successful coach in De Kuip. “We think we have a very nice story to bind Arne Slot to us for longer”, Te Kloese says in conversation with the General Journal.

Should Feyenoord fail to keep Slot on board, there are two serious candidates to take over in De Kuip. “It would be bad if Te Kloese didn’t have a shadow list,” says Van der Kraan. “Then they are of course looking for a trainer who plays football in the same style. Peter Bosz is a good candidate, because he also plays very offensive football and adheres to the Cruijff philosophy.” Valentijn Driessen has also heard the name Bosz. “And I heard Jon Dahl Tomasson,” adds the football chief.

Mike Verweij does not think that Feyenoord will dare to knock on AZ’s door again. The Alkmaarders immediately broke with Slot in December 2020 when they heard that the Bergentheimer was having discussions with the club from Rotterdam South in the background. At the time, AZ stated in a response that it only wanted to work with a trainer ‘who is completely focused on AZ’. “I don’t think they like Pascal Jansen either,” said Verweij. “I think Bosz and Tomasson are very logical candidates.”
