Kenneth Perez hopes that Vincent Janssen will not get a starting place with the Dutch national team on Friday afternoon. The Danish analyst of ESPN was shocked on Monday by the level that the Antwerp striker showed in the 2-0 win against Senegal and, if he were national coach himself, would draw up Memphis Depay. It doesn’t matter to Perez that he should be replaced at halftime.

National coach Louis van Gaal announced on Thursday that Depay can only play one half against Ecuador and so the table of World Cup talk on ESPN about the interpretation of the three offensive positions. “I am sure that Vincent Janssen will not play,” says Perez. “That was such a disappointing performance. You have Depay and Bergwijn, who also did not play well, and then you can put Cody Gakpo behind them on 10.”

Later, the Danish analyst comes back to Janssen’s game against Senegal. “What I was so disappointed about Janssen is that he stands for depth, holding the balls and playing football. He did none of that. Bergwijn is an all-or-nothing player in that position and then I can understand that you have a plays badly, but Janssen… He did something right once on so many attacks.”

Finally, Perez hopes that Van Gaal will find a solution for the difficult build-up at the the Dutch. Frenkie de Jong often came to get the balls and the former midfielder believes that the Netherlands should have more options than just letting De Jong run. “It was very difficult with three central defenders and if you are the parent, it is difficult to build up. You miss a station in midfield.”
