Julian Nagelsmann has apologized for statements he made after the 3-2 loss to Borussia Mönchengladbach. The coach of Bayern Munich was very dissatisfied with the way referee Tobias Welz led the game and let him know afterwards in no uncertain terms. Nagelsmann has now returned to that.

After eight minutes Dayot Upamecano was already shown the red card and according to Nagelsmann that decision was seriously wrong. After the game, the coach strode from The Record Master then furiously went to the referee’s dressing room, loudly wondering if he was being fooled. “This must be a joke,” Nagelsmann shouted, according to the German branch of Sky Sports several times. After coming out of the umpires’ booth, he called them a “weak mess.”

Also at the press conference, Bayern’s coach stated that he absolutely disagreed with Welz’s decisions. “It really wasn’t a red card and no one can tell me that it was,” said various German media from Nagelsmann’s mouth. “I would have liked to hear from the referee after the match that it might have been a difficult decision for him. But no, I didn’t hear anything.”

In the end, Nagelsmann used Bayern’s club channels to go back on his words. “Emotions are part of the sport and I thought I should vent about that red card after the game. Still, I have to apologize to Tobias Welz and his team for my choice of words. Unfortunately I went too far there.” Due to the defeat of the reigning champion of Germany, the lead is up for grabs for Union Berlin. If the capitals beat Schalke 04 on Sunday afternoon, they will be the new list leader.
