Jordi Cruijff will leave Barcelona after this season, the Catalans announced through the official channels. Johan Cruijff’s son informed President Joan Laporta during ‘an emotional conversation’ on Tuesday morning that he will not renew his expiring contract. The sporting director of Barcelona is looking for a new challenge after two years.

Cruijff’s departure means that another vacancy will become available in the sporting branch of the Barcelona board. Earlier, director of professional football Mateu Alemany also left. The Spaniard is close to signing for Aston Villa in the Premier League. Barcelona is in talks with former player Deco to succeed Alemany in the Spotify Camp Nou.

Cruijff was seen internally as a potential successor to Alemany, but has now decided to leave Barcelona after two years. The 49-year-old former footballer was technical advisor to the Catalans in the 2021/22 season before being promoted to sporting director last summer. “During his two seasons here, Cruyff has been instrumental in rebuilding the first team with some extremely wise decisions,” Barcelona said in a statement.

“He also showed an ability to build good relationships with the coaching staff of the club. Barcelona would like to thank Cruijff for his important contribution as part of the management and wish him all the luck in his further professional career,” said the Spaniards. The eight-time international of the Dutch played 54 games for Barcelona during his career.
