Joan Laporta has expressed hope that Ousmane Dembele will reconsider extending his contract at the Camp Nou. The attacker has his sights set on a departure and will basically close the door at Barcelona this summer. Laporta hopes that the attacker, who has a transfer-free status in a few months, will change his mind, he told the Mobile World Congress (MWC).
Barcelona have made unsuccessful attempts in recent months to extend the Frenchman’s expiring contract. For Dembele, there seemed to be a supporting role in Catalonia at Barça in the last six months of his contract, but the attacker was given a starting place from Xavi in the LaLiga game at Valencia (1-4). Last Sunday, he was the celebrated man in the 4-0 home win over Athletic Club. Dembele came in for Ferran Torres twenty minutes before the end, scoring a goal and two assists.
“He (Dembélé, ed.) has a proposal,” Laporta said before the congress. “We have always wanted him to stay because he is an extraordinary player. For me he is one of the best players in the world in his position. We would like to see him reconsider at the end of the season. ” Dembele did not respond to Barcelona extension proposals during the winter transfer window. According to him, a departure was also not an option. The Frenchman had several offers to leave the Camp Nou.
After the transfer deadline, Xavi decided to add the attacker to the selection after all, which resulted in the winger on a big whistle in the Camp Nou. “I’ve always said it, for me he is one of the best players in his position,” Laporta emphasizes again. “We’ll see what happens at the end of the season.
