Jeroen Elshoff has apologized after he posted a video on Instagram in which he imitated a Japanese commentator. The NOS commentator, who is quarantining the Olympic Games in a hotel in Sendai because of a corona infection, says he does not want to hurt anyone and has removed the video from his account.

“Yesterday I tried to imitate a Japanese baseball commentator in a video on Insta. It was not my intention at all to insult or hurt anyone. I offer my sincere apologies for that. already deleted,” Elshoff wrote in a tweet on Thursday. On Wednesday, he responded to criticism he received. “I was just trying to imitate what Japanese commentary sounds like to me, just like when someone tries to speak the Netherlands without mastering the language. I wasn’t making fun of anything.”

Elshoff has been reporting on his quarantine in recent days, which he describes as ‘hell’. For example, the commentator, who gave radio commentary from his hotel room on Tuesday during the matches of the the Dutch Lionesses against China (8-2), shared a photo of the tight morning program that he is obliged to follow: food at 7:15 am and a health check at 7:45 am. He also shared photos of the meager meals he receives and was suddenly taken from his room without consent on Monday morning Dutch time to donate blood, which he refused to do.
