Jack van Gelder is seeking shelter for the time being, Hélène Hendriks reports HLF8. Van Gelder is a regular guest in the talk show on Mondays SBS 6, but due to all the commotion around his person, is absent for the time being. “Jack is still very welcome, but he has decided to take some rest,” Hendriks said at the start of the talk show.
Van Gelder was Saturday in the extensive article of de Volkskrant mentioned as one of the presenters who would have been guilty of transgressive behavior at the NOS. Van Gelder invited colleague Aïcha Marghadi in a telephone conversation to take a bath with him and is said to have called another NOS employee a ‘whore’. Last Friday, Van Gelder opted for a flight ahead by entering HLF8 to address the allegations.
On Monday, Van Gelder was therefore missing from his familiar place HLF8. “Jack van Gelder is of course always with us on Mondays to discuss the sport,” said Hendriks. “He is very welcome, by the way. I have of course spoken to him. It is not because he wants to hide or has nothing to say, but purely because whatever he says himself: he feels he cannot do it right.”
In Friday’s talk show, Van Gelder talked about two incidents in which he was involved. The former reporter emphasized that these are “misplaced jokes” and that he never had any ill will. In 2011 or 2012, fellow presenter Marghadi called Van Gelder, who was in the bath at the time of the call, he said. “A remarkable story. She then asked if I wanted to be her mentor. And then I would have made the comment: if you come and sit with me in the bath, fine. Well, that’s a joke to me, but it’s quite hit hard, as it turns out.” Van Gelder admitted that in the same period he would have shouted ‘whore, bitch or other words’ at a female colleague during a heated discussion. “We all say things on a whim sometimes.”
