Charles De Ketelaere has spoken to the Italian media about PSV’s interest in him this summer. The 22-year-old Belgian has so far failed to succeed at AC Milan, which has kept him at Atalanta this season. PSV also showed interest in De Ketelaere, but ultimately missed out on his services. The people of Eindhoven themselves eventually teamed up with various other flavors such as Malik Tillman and Hirving Lozano. The latter did make the switch from Serie A to the Eredivisie.
In conversation with La Gazzetta dello Sport De Ketelaere looks back on the troubled transfer summer around his person. PSV is also a topic of discussion. “I wanted to prove myself at a new club. It’s not that I didn’t want to go to PSV or to other clubs, but I really wanted to go to Atalanta. Negotiations went on all summer long. I asked myself if I should go for my chance, or if I should prove myself to another team. The second option gave me a better feeling, especially when Atalanta came forward. I play closer to the goal here, so I can show the best version of myself.”
De Ketelaere has so far made forty appearances for Milan. The Belgian international was unable to score yet, but he did provide one assist. De Ketelaere is self-critical. “It is also my fault that it did not work out at Milan. I didn’t expect to play such a season, but I don’t regret my transfer. I didn’t reach my level and my role as a substitute didn’t help me either.” In the summer of 2022, Milan paid no less than 36.5 million euros to loosen De Ketelaere. Atalanta rents him this season for 3 million euros.
De Ketelaere wants to regain his confidence in Bergamo. The left leg received quite a bit of criticism during his period in Milan. “I don’t always read the newspapers and I try to shut myself off from it, but you still catch what is being said about you. That didn’t leave me cold and the fact that I didn’t score was also a problem. People want to see goals and assists, they don’t look at other performances.” For Atalanta, De Ketelaere has one goal and one assist after three matches.
