Edwin van der Sar wants to have clarity within two months about the position of technical director at Ajax. That is what the general director of the Amsterdammers tells in the program Rondo by Ziggo Sport. Since Marc Overmars left the club a year ago due to transgressive behaviour, Gerry Hamstra and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar have been taking care of technical matters in the Johan Cruijff ArenA. However, there is still a lot of uncertainty about the position and if it is up to Van der Sar, this will soon come to an end.

Overmars announced his departure from Amsterdam in February of last year. The current technical director of Royal Antwerp realized that his behavior towards several female colleagues within the club was unacceptable and decided to leave the ship. Hamstra and Huntelaar were then temporarily moved forward to do the technical honors. Acting of H2 however, in the summer transfer window in particular, the duo came in for a lot of criticism, and the call for a new technically responsible person grew. Van der Sar agrees on Monday that this is high on the schedule.

“It’s time for us to clarify the position of technical director,” says the former goalkeeper Rondo. “That can be someone from within the club or from outside the club.” However, something will be changed in terms of design, explains Van der Sar. “We will split the position. The position of technical director has become so much bigger.”

Several names of potential successors to Overmars have already been doing the rounds in the media. That’s how Ajax would be according to it General Journal and The Telegraph have been very close to appointing Alex Kroes (director of International Football Strategy at AZ) and, according to the latter newspaper, also asked Michael Reschke, an old acquaintance of Huntelaar and former technical man at Bayern Munich and Schalke 04. Van der Sar does not name any names , but admits to having spoken with several candidates. “But nothing came out of that. That had to do with availability or they thought the competition was too small,” said the 52-year-old driver.
