Wesley Sneijder is impressed by Matthijs de Ligt’s recent performances at Bayern Munich. The analyst had his doubts at first, but sees the Dutchman becoming increasingly important with the German superpower. Sneijder also wonders what Bayern is planning with Daley Blind, who starts on the bench against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday and has a formidable competitor in João Cancelo.

“I’ve had my doubts about him for a long time,” Sneijder opens in the Champions League broadcast of RTL7. “Because I had the feeling that as he got older, he would also get heavier. Difficult than turning and turning. But he surprises me now, he is one of the most important links in the back of Bayern.” Presenter Humberto Tan shifts attention to Blind and suggests that the former Ajax player cannot be very happy with Cancelo’s interim arrival.

Worry about Blind
“No, of course not. And then also with Davies there”, Sneijder refers to Bayern’s left back. “That will be an almost hopeless situation for him for the left back position. But we don’t know what he was brought in by Bayern for. Maybe that trainer (Julian Nagelsmann, ed.) has ideas with him as one of the controllers for the defense. As a kind of extension in the build-up. Of course he can do that. We only know that it becomes vulnerable with him in the back. But I do hope for him that he will make minutes again”, Sneijder continues to look hopefully to the future.

Nagelsmann chose Cancelo as left back against VfL Bochum (3-0 win) on Saturday, with Davies and Blind starting on the bench. Against PSG, Cancelo plays as a kind of wingback on the left, with spare roles for Davies and Blind again. The latter has made two appearances totaling 35 minutes in the Bundesliga since his arrival at Bayern. Nagelsmann also used it once in the DFB-Pokal.
