Wout Weghorst was close to a transfer to Tottenham Hotspur in the last transfer window, he says in conversation with Kicker. The 28-year-old striker of VfL Wolfsburg was there the Spurs in the picture to become the stand-in for Harry Kane. However, the dream transfer did not get off the ground for Weghorst, partly because his current employer allegedly asked for an amount of 35 million euros.

“I will happily stay with Wolfsburg. But I can be honest: of course I knew there was interest left and right. Tottenham’s interest was serious, I was a candidate there ”, says Weghorst. A transfer to the Premier League was a serious option for him. “Of course you are working on something like that. It is also a confirmation for me that I am on the right track. ”

Weghorst has scored 40 goals in 86 games for VfL Wolfsburg since he was taken over for 10.5 million euros from AZ in the summer of 2018. At an earlier stage, his name was associated with Arsenal, while with that average he also played in the spotlight at Tottenham. VfL Wolfsburg reportedly demanded 35 million euros for Weghorst’s contract, which was still running until mid-2023, which meant that Tottenham ended up with Carlos Vinícius in the search for a stand-in for Kane.

“I am 28 years old and would like to win prizes, I have made that clear here. I hope that as a team we can improve ourselves and perform even better. If one day I feel that I can no longer achieve my goals at VfL Wolfsburg, I will indicate that. That is not the case now. The Premier League remains a dream, ”says Weghorst. The VfL Wolfsburg striker was not part of the selection of Orange during the last international period.
