Internazionale handed Atalanta its third loss in a row on Sunday. With Denzel Dumfries and Stefan de Vrij in the base, the Milanese were 2-3 too strong for Atalanta, which also started with two Dutchmen. André Onana distinguished himself before the break with two beautiful saves, including one on a bet by Teun Koopmeiners. Dumfries suffered a knee injury in the final phase and will fear for his participation in the World Cup in Qatar. After an extremely difficult start to the competition, Inter is now fourth in Serie A, while Atalanta will be disappointed with the current place six.

Marten de Roon was absent from Atalanta due to a muscle injury. The Dutchman will report in Zeist on Monday to prepare for the World Cup in Qatar. Teun Koopmeiners and Hans Hateboer were in the starting line-up for the home team. Romelu Lukaku (thigh injury) was still out of the game at Inter, making Edin Dzeko and Lautaro Martínez the striker duo.

Atalanta was the dominant party from the first minute. After more than fifteen minutes of play, former Ajax player André Onana distinguished himself with two wonderful saves. First he cleverly tapped a Koopmeiners bet out of the bottom left corner, before miraculously stopping José Luis Palomino from the following corner.

Halfway through the first half, Onana still had to bow when Inter, due to a foul by De Vrij on Duván Zapata, conceded a penalty. From the spot, Ademola Lookman gave Atalanta the lead with a very convincing bang in the intersection, just like the Englishman did a week ago against Napoli (1-2 loss). Eight minutes before the break, Inter fought back via Dzeko, who managed to extend a cross from Martínez with the heel: 1-1.

The game went back and forth after the break. Zapata came close in the 54th minute with a shot at the post and had to watch as Inter struck twice on the other side almost immediately afterwards. First, Dzeko worked in a low cross from Federico Dimarco with some fortune: 1-2. Joakim Maehle thought he could clear the ball on the goal line, but just came up short. In the 62nd minute, a corner kick led to Inter’s next goal. Martínez extended the ball at the near post, after which it unfortunately landed on the head of Atalanta defender José Luis Palomino: an own goal.

Dumfries went down in pain in the 72nd minute and had to be replaced by Raoul Bellanova. Inter’s right-back grabbed his right knee as he went down, possibly due to a knock from Palomino. Atalanta quickly made the match exciting again via a corner by Koopmeiners, which was headed in by Palomino: 2-3. Deep into stoppage time, Ruslan Malinovsky had a good shot at the equalizer, but the ball choked in a pinball machine of Inter defenders.
