Frank Wormuth talks in an interview with Football International among other things about what has happened around Rai Vloet. The former coach of Heracles Almelo emphasizes that he still has a good relationship with the midfielder, despite the fact that the German was lied to about drinking prior to the fatal accident on the A4. It is now clear that Vloet has to go to jail for 2.5 years for driving four-year-old Gio Roos to death.
“I had a special bond with Rai. Still, if you ask me. He was the player who made the difference for us, as guys like Brandley Kuwas, Robin Pröpper and Cyriel Dessers did in my first period”, looks Wormuth returned to his employment with Heracles between 2018 and 2022. The coach urged Vloet, especially in his second year in Almelo, to get more out of his career. “‘Yes, trainer, it will be fine’, he said. And then it happened… terrible.” With too much to drink, the midfielder annex attacker caused a fatal accident in November 2021.

Wormuth assumed Vloet’s innocence and visited him at home after the accident. “He was in a little room at his mother’s house. I thought: If he’s here for half a year, he’ll break down. It reminded me of my own son, who suffers from depression. I wanted to prevent Rai from getting sick too. I have to bring this boy back to the team, I thought. Only: after that everything went way too fast.” Two months after the traffic accident, Wormuth let Vloet return to the main force of Heracles. A big mistake, the clubless coach now frankly admits.
“I was so in that tunnel,” admits the ex-trainer of Heracles. “Yes, I wanted to help him. Because I know what depression does to a person. At first I had planned that he would train alone. But then I saw him training, not even at 100 percent, and then I thought… I’m taking him… And yes, then you are so under the spell of performing… Then I brought him in.” Wormuth regrets that, even though the decision was widely supported within Heracles. “We asked everyone at the club beforehand . Even sponsors. “Do you mind if we take him?” Nobody had that.”

A day after the verdict, Rai Vloet just came into action for FK Ural.
Wormuth understands that there were also people within Heracles who found it incomprehensible that Vloet made his comeback so quickly. “Logically.” The trainer switched to FC Groningen in mid-2022, where he was fired after a bad series. Vloet’s contract was soon terminated, after which he ended up in Russia via Kazakhstan. Despite everything, Wormuth is open to contact with his former pupil. “He made a very big mistake and should be punished for it, no discussion. Although no punishment will bring back the boy’s life. But I will also be there for Rai if he wants to. Even if he gets to jail, then I look for him.”
