Ridgeciano Haps is very candid on Wednesday with a story on his Instagram page. The left back, who Feyenoord exchanged for Venezia on Tuesday, looks back on a very difficult period off the field. Eighteen months ago, Haps’ father was diagnosed with lung cancer. The terrible news was a major attack on the mental and physical condition of the wing defender who left Feyenoord.

“I want to share my story with you”, Haps opens his moving story on Wednesday. “My father suffered from chest pains a year and a half ago. He had an MRI scan and we found out that he had lung cancer. Phase 3, so that meant it was 50/50 whether he would survive or not. I was so broken mentally and physically because I hardly talked about it with anyone. I walked with it for a year until I couldn’t handle it physically/mentally anymore to be able to play football. As a result, I also ended up in hospital for a few days.”

“We have also prayed a lot with the family and also with the church and the prayers have been heard,” said the very relieved Haps. “He is a CONQUER. A few months ago we were told that he has recovered from his lung cancer. Dad, I’m very happy that you were able to experience this day with me and we thank God for his love, goodness, faithfulness and mercy! When jesus says yes nobody can say no! Daddy I LOVE YOU.”

The transfer from Haps to Venezia was finally completed on Tuesday. The Italians pay according to journalist Gianluca Di Marzio and Feyenoord Transfermarkt 500,000 euros for the 28-year-old wing defender, with which Feyenoord records a significant loss. In 2017, the Rotterdammers paid six million euros to untie Haps at AZ. Partly due to injuries, his employment in Rotterdam was not a resounding success. The competition now seems to have been finally won by Tyrell Malacia. Haps made 72 appearances for Feyenoord in the Eredivisie in the past four seasons. His contract ran until mid-2022, making this transfer window the penultimate moment for Feyenoord to still have a transfer fee left to Haps.
