Yassin Ayoub lost on Sunday afternoon with Excelsior from his old love FC Utrecht (0-1). Although the Kralingers failed to take points, the 28-year-old midfielder was one of the best players on Excelsior’s side. The Moroccan spoke with Utrecht this summer about a return to the Galgenwaard, but in the Dom city people doubted his fitness.

Ayoub was transfer-free this summer after a failed adventure at the Greek Panathinaikos. Ideally, the controller would have re-engaged with the club for which he played 172 games, but he didn’t get that chance. “I had to wait for them, it depended on what would happen to other players. I thought that was so disrespectful after everything I did for the club,” Ayoub told the General Newspaper.

Nevertheless, Ayoub still has warm memories of Utrecht. “I still support FC Utrecht, but I still think it’s a shame that they didn’t give me the benefit of the doubt. You can see it doesn’t take long to get fit. I am now happy at Excelsior, but that disappointed me.” Ayoub has already played eight times for Excelsior this season, but was unable to score and did not provide any assists.

Excelsior is currently in eleventh place in the Eredivisie. Ayoub definitely doesn’t want to look down yet. “We are not a relegation candidate, you are only that if you label yourself that way. We have enough quality to stay away from the lower regions, I am convinced of that. I assume we’ll stay in it.” Next Saturday, the Kralingers will take on NEC in Nijmegen at 9 p.m.
