Immediately after the questionable goal by Ajax defender Noussair Mazraoui, the PSV camp was completely convinced that Daley Blind had let the ball pass the sideline just before. Because there was no camera perpendicular to the sideline, Rob van Dieperink, the VAR on duty, could not determine with certainty whether the ball had crossed the line or not. Sjoerd Mossou shows with a homemade film how the image can be distorted if the camera is not straight on the line.

The ball must have completely crossed the sideline to constitute a throw-in for the opponent. Due to the spherical shape of the ball, it may tricky to determine that: the ball partly ‘floats’ above the field. Mossou put it to the test in the living room and showed on Twitter that a ball that appears over the line from a certain camera angle, does not have to be in reality. It only becomes apparent when the camera aligns with the ball.

Of course, it is not yet possible to give a definitive answer about the moment of Sunday afternoon at the top match between PSV and Ajax. “I think he was in guys,” Mossou nevertheless writes with his video. When the journalist puts the ball just a little further from the line in another video, then the ball turns out. “Especially for the PSV players”, that short film was therefore intended.

Referee boss Dick van Egmond is also happy with the decision of the VAR. “The VAR made the only right decision at 1-2”, Van Egmond said to The Telegraph. According to the referees coordinator, the goal simply could not be disallowed. “Then Ajax and the media would have rightly asked for proof. There simply is not. Based on the images available, it cannot be seen that the ball has completely crossed the sidelines.”
