With less than two minutes on the clock, Mats Seuntjens provided a wonderful opening goal against Vitesse (1-1) on Saturday evening. The striker of Fortuna Sittard outwitted goalkeeper Markus Schubert by shooting a corner in one go. Seuntjens confessed after the game at ESPN that it was a deliberate attempt.

“Two weeks ago I said to the group of players and to the trainers: ‘Just let me kick the corner kicks, I’ll just shoot the goal’”, said Seuntjens. “Then you see where the space is. Normally I shoot a corner more towards the first post, but now the second post was wide open, so I just gave it a try.” It is not the first time that the Fortuna striker has attempted to shoot in a corner in one go. “I’ve had enough times that I wanted to do the same thing, but it didn’t go so well.”

When asked whether this is the most beautiful goal of the 29-year-old Seuntjens in his career, he nodded in agreement. “I hit the ball really well. Two weeks ago when I visited Sparta, I also scored a nice goal, but I think this one is the most special.” Although Seuntjens’ goal was beautiful, the same could not be said about the match. “Our game was not good, although we had a difficult week with difficult opponents. You know it will be very tough against Ajax”, he referred to the 0-5 defeat.

In the match against Vitesse, Fortuna could not really make a fist in an attacking sense, Seuntjens also saw. “At the front we missed Zian Flemming and Lisandro Semedo today. Then you miss some punch and goals, but you could see today that if we play as a team and show mentality, we can also get a point at Vitesse.”
