Marciano Vink does not understand that André Onana is again part of the selection of Ajax. The goalkeeper, who had been banned for almost a year for using banned substances, made his comeback under the bar this week in the Champions League game against Besiktas (1-2). Vink would have preferred Jay Gorter, while Sjaak Swart, who was also a guest at Good morning Eredivisie does not understand why Ajax has let Kjell Scherpen go.

Swart did not see Onana’s return against Besiktas coming, he told the football talk show on Sunday morning. “I was very surprised by it,” said the Ajax legend. “I hadn’t heard it during the week. They don’t have to consult with me, they don’t do that anyway. But I didn’t expect it to happen.” Swart finds it difficult to judge the situation. “I don’t know what the situation is at Ajax. Ajax took good care of him when he was out of circulation, so he has to do something in return. If he fights back, I’m fine with it. But not if he wants to leave. Pasveer had simply left it alone.”

“The problem is that there is a lot of sentiment in this matter,” said Vink. “I find it incomprehensible that he is still in the match selection. Especially if you look at the history, where Ajax has been really lenient. Nobody put that pill in his mouth, he did that himself. I think Overmars said that he was done with it. I think Pasveer is doing great, the numbers also show that. The saves he makes are Onana-like. So there is no need at all.”

Vink does not understand why Jay Gorter was not put on target in the Champions League match against Besiktas. “You let them keep goal in Young Ajax,” said the analyst. “I would have liked to have him goal against Besiktas.” Fresia Cousiño Arias clearly thinks otherwise. “In the Champions League?”, the presenter wonders in surprise. Vink: “I understand that they choose this path, but when they decided to bring Onana into the group, they could also have brought Gorter into the group. If you see how Onana positions itself against Ajax, I think: do not do it.”

“You come from Go Ahead, there you keep a zero for 24 matches, and then you can play in Jong Ajax every other week at Ajax,” continues Vink. “And then you are expected to be ready for the A-selection. How can you do that if you don’t have continuity with multiple matches in a row? It’s all a bit crooked.” Swart considers Gorter not yet ready for Ajax’s first. “I have seen him play several matches, but I think he is too weak with high balls. Balls from the side are important at Ajax, many goals are made from them. I must be honest that I am the keeper of FC Emmen (Kjell Scherpen, ed.) liked it better.”
