Rick Karsdorp is not counting on a return to the Dutch national team. The right back of AS Roma is currently in the Netherlands for the Conference League match against Vitesse and is being ESPN asked about the national team. Karsdorp has put the Dutch out of his mind, he says. Although he is a regular player at Roma, he played his last international match four years ago.

Karsdorp participated in October 2016 in the World Cup qualifiers against Belarus (4-1 win) and France (0-1 defeat). In March 2017, he also played against Bulgaria (2-0 defeat). He was not called up for years after that. In the run-up to last summer’s European Championship, Karsdorp was part of the pre-selection, but he eventually dropped out. Denzel Dumfries seems to be the first choice as a right back at the Dutch. Last week Louis van Gaal also included Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong in his pre-squad for this month’s exhibition games against Denmark and Germany. Jurriën Timber can also be used at that location.

It is therefore unnecessary to discuss the subject of the Dutch, Karsdorp believes. “I’ve put it out of my mind. If you played 40 to 45 games last season and are going to tap it again this year and have never actually heard from the KNVB… Last year for the European Championship I was in the preselection, but after that I haven’t heard anything again. Then you have to be honest. At some point, new players will also come. Then you don’t have to. I accepted it very easily and to be honest, I don’t look at the list anymore. It’s not that I I’m indifferent about it. I automatically get an app from my father or from friends: have you seen the list? Then I’ll take a look, but I’m not waiting for an e-mail, absolutely not.”
