Ronald Koeman sees Mats Wieffer as a ‘better version of Marten de Roon’. The national coach of the Dutch recorded this during a press conference at the KNVB Campus in Zeist. Wieffer can make his debut for the Dutch national team during this international period and Koeman already hinted that he is certainly thinking about it.

During the day Studio Football on Sunday evening it was stated that there is a potential top football player in Wieffer. That opinion was presented to Koeman on Monday. “He will not pass ten men and hand the ball to the striker on a silver platter. I don’t know if I should say this, but I told Wieffer that he can become an even better Marten de Roon in the long run. I asked him also whether he saw that as a compliment and he thought so, haha.

With this, the national coach seemed to be preparing for a future role for Wieffer in the Dutch national team. “I mean by that to indicate that he is a team player, that he is firmly on the ball and has a good pass. He also intercepts a lot without the ball. Those are qualities that I and other national coaches encouraged to often appeal to to do on Marten de Roon. That was always a good couple with Frenkie de Jong and Wieffer is still young, so that can only get better.”

Prior to the international match, Koeman asked what kind of meat he would get in the cockpit with the Feyenoord midfielder. “I spoke to him when I was at Feyenoord’s training a few weeks ago and you also have information, contact with the trainers of the clubs. way with all the rave reviews and the call for the Dutch.”
