Tijjani Reijnders realizes that he got away well during AZ – Ajax (2-1) two weeks ago. In the final phase of that match he hit Brian Brobbey with a solid tackle and a red card seemed the only appropriate punishment. Referee Bas Nijhuis kept it to yellow and Reijnders now knows that he was lucky there.

The AZ midfielder, who is the list leader in the Eredivisie with his team, did not recognize himself when he saw the images again. “At that moment I wanted to take a counter out, but I hit it harder than expected,” says Reijnders during The Football Canteen on ESPN. “You can also see in the images that I was shocked. Of course it was not the intention to kick him injured.”

Nijhuis decided not to send Reijnders away and the playmaker admits that he was very lucky there. “Luckily I got away with yellow, but it could also have been red. I actually thought it would be red, because he waited a while. Then I thought I might be sent away, but luckily I was allowed to stay. Have I said anything to Brobbey yet? No, not actually. I have not had any contact with him. Ajax was quickly off the field and I have no contact with him via app.”

After the game Brobbey responded in conversation with The Telegraph already on the incident. According to him, in his entire career, no one has ever come in like this. “They’ve never kicked me like that. No, never. Normally they pull on my shirt or something. And he didn’t get a red, no. But yeah… Incoming with your leg like that is very dangerous. I think you can’t do something like that. Maybe it happened by accident.”
