Besiktas was eliminated in the Turkish Cup on Wednesday. Without Wout Weghorst, who left for Manchester United, he lost to competitor Ankaragücü in the eighth final: 1-1 and 4-3 after penalties. Cenk Tosun equalized as a substitute, so an extension and penalties were needed to decide. The substitute Atiba Hutchison (39), even twice, and Arthur Masuaku failed, so that Besiktas can no longer dream of winning the cup.

The midweek cup meeting in Ankara got off to a false start for Besiktas. After quick combination work in the box, Ali Sowe broke the spell for Ankaragücü from close range: 1-0. A setback for the visitors from Istanbul and it took until the 77th minute before the equalizer could finally be recorded. Goalkeeper Gökhan Akkan made a nice save on a header, but nothing could be done against the effort from close by by substitute Cen: 1-1. In the remaining minutes of regular playing time, no more goals were scored, so extra time had to offer a solution.

The accurate Cenk did not make it to the end of the match. In the first half of the extension, the attacker was out with a groin injury. The almost forty-year-old Atiba Hutchison replaced him at Besiktas. Extra time did not bring a winner, so penalty kicks were necessary. Ankaragücü made no mistake: all four bets hit the target. Substitutes Hutchison and Masuaku made an error on behalf of the visitors. The former had to take over his penalty kick because Akkan moved off the line too early. The goalkeeper of the home team also saved on the second attempt and is therefore the hero of Ankaragücü. For Besiktas, the eighth final of the cup in Turkey is therefore the final station.
