Hamburger SV will not return to the Bundesliga for the time being. The team of coach Tim Walter won 0-1 on Sunday afternoon on the final day visiting relegated SV Sandhausen and seemed to have enough for second place, until competitor 1. FC Heidenheim secured a 2-3 win against Regensburg in minute 98. HSV therefore finishes as number three and enters the play-offs.

HSV started the last day as number three and knew that it was dependent on the competition. With a victory over Sandhausen and a defeat of Heidenheim, the second place was a fact. Leader SV Darmstadt previously secured promotion with a win over FC Magdeburg (1-0) and returns after six years.

HSV had a true dream start against Sandhausen, who had already been relegated, as Jean-Luc Dompe hit the ball after three minutes: 0-1. Robert Glatzel could have given the visitors roses, but his header after more than twenty minutes just went wide. Then teammate Bastian Schonlau headed just over the crossbar. The victory was not given away by HSV in the remainder of the match.

Heidenheim faced a 2-0 deficit in the second half on a visit to Regensburg in the space of five minutes. However, a Benedict Saller own goal soon eased the tension. Jan-Niklas Beste even put both teams next to each other in minute 93, after which Tim Kleindienst completed the verdict in minute 98. In Sandhausen, fans of HSV were already partying on the field. So too early.

Last year, HSV also just missed promotion. Then Hertha BSC was too strong at home with 0-2, after the first leg was won 0-1 by the club from Hamburg. With Heidenheim’s victory, they end the season as the leader. Darmstadt finished second, while HSV entered the play-offs as number three for promotion-relegation. It must be competed against VfB Stuttgart, which finished sixteenth in the Bundesliga.
