The marriage between Royal Antwerp and Michael Frey seems to be over for good. The striker has been at odds with trainer Mark van Bommel for some time and has been training with the B team for months. Even though the Swiss could still be useful as a crowbar, Van Bommel is not considering bringing Frey back to the main force.
When asked whether there is still a future for Frey in the A-selection, Van Bommel is unrelenting. “No, Michael has made it impossible for himself,” said the Dutchman. The feud between Van Bommel and Frey has its origins in January of this year, when the attacker was dissatisfied with a choice made by his trainer and walked angrily towards the team bus after the cup match with KRC Genk.
Vincent Janssen’s biggest competitor mainly played second fiddle last season and appeared in 7 competition matches, while Janssen started 32 times for Van Bommel. The Swiss then opted for his money and rented out the second half of the season to Schalke 04. With that club, Frey was relegated to the 2. Bundesliga. He also failed to score in fifteen games.
An important week is coming for Van Bommel and Antwerp. Plays Wednesday evening the Great Old against competitor and leader KAA Gent. Next week Shakhtar Donetsk will be the opponent during the second round of the Champions League. After the 5-0 defeat to FC Barcelona, Van Bommel benefits from a good result so as not to fall further behind in Group H.
