Olivier Boscagli had a rather disappointing debut season at PSV, although the French defender / midfielder does not want to blame former trainer Mark van Bommel for this. The Frenchman, who revived under Roger Schmidt, puts his hand in his own bosom by stating that he simply showed too little in Eindhoven last season, during matches and training.

“Of course we can talk about Mark van Bommel. Maybe he could have given me more confidence or could have tried me in the center of the back. But I look at myself”, emphasizes the self-critical Boscagli in an interview with Football International. “I showed him far too little on the training field. I also understand the criticism of me, I just didn’t play football well”, said the PSV player, who was taken over from OGC Nice in 2019 and whose contract in the Philips Stadium continues for more than two years.

Boscagli says he started his Dutch adventure with the wrong attitude. “I thought I would do it with my right left leg here for a while. Of course it doesn’t work that way. You can find players with my talent everywhere”, the honest PSV player concludes. “It’s about what you are willing to do extra to make a difference with your talent. I wasn’t fit enough and not ready to play three top matches in one week. Then it’s about being honest with yourself.”

Where Van Bommel and his temporary successor Ernest Faber mainly used Boscagli as a left back, Schmidt sees him as the ideal connecting player in PSV’s midfield. For some time now, Boscagli has even been preferred to Ibrahim Sangaré as controller. Schmidt was recently enthusiastic about the midfielder after the home game with Heracles Almelo (3-0). “Boscagli is a very complete player. He always has good ideas on the ball, he sees everything and has the technical qualities to carry it out. It is no coincidence that he gives two assists, because he is a very good player. He has shown what I expect from him “, said the satisfied PSV coach.
