Ronald Araújo returns to Barcelona with a hamstring injury, the Catalan club reports via official channels on Tuesday. The defender is currently in South America for World Cup qualifiers with Uruguay, but did not come out unscathed. Araújo was injured in the 3-0 loss against Argentina on Sunday and appears to have suffered a hamstring injury. For that reason, he is also missing on Thursday in the World Cup qualifier against Brazil.

Araújo started on Monday against Argentina in the base, but had to be replaced by Álvaro González fifteen minutes before the end. Barcelona announced on Tuesday through the official channels that it is a hamstring injury. “The player will return to Barcelona where the medical staff will assess the injury,” added Barcelona. Araújo’s injury has put a major damper on Koeman as he has called on the defender in all games in LaLiga this season.

In total, Araújo has played nine times for Barca this season, seven times in LaLiga and twice in the Champions League. In those nine games he managed to find the net once, from a header in the home game against Granada. At Uruguay, he is not always assured of a starting spot and only started in two of the last nine international matches. Uruguay is in fourth place in World Cup qualifiers behind Brazil, Argentina and Colombia with sixteen points from eleven matches.

It is not yet known exactly how long Araújo will be out of circulation, further research must show. The next squatter is scheduled for October 24 for Barcelona. Then Koeman’s team plays at home against Real Madrid. Four days earlier, the points drought in the Champions League must come to an end against Dinamo Kiev.
