Manchester City was already ahead at halftime against Everton on New Year’s Eve, yet the frustration of Pep Guardiola’s team is dripping off. Frank de Boer and Sander Westerveld showed some striking moments during the break of the Premier League match. For example, Kevin De Bruyne had, according to the analysts of via play could just get red for a coarse charge on Amadou Onana. “Look! This is just stretched,” says De Boer.

The Citizens seem to be annoyed by Everton’s fierce play, which is doing everything it can to stop the home side on the last day of 2022. That did not quite work out, as Erling Braut Haaland shot City ahead in the 25th minute after a brilliant assist from Riyad Mahrez. “Mahrez almost always goes inside, which we saw today at Manchester United with Antony, but you also have to go outside,” says De Boer. “He does that, and then you see the result. A good action, and Haaland dropping back to receive the ball is also good.”

However, things did not go smoothly at City. This was noticeable in the large number of violations that the number two in the Premier League made. The most startling was a hard kick from De Bruyne on his compatriot Onana. “This is really yellow with a red edge, you know,” says De Boer. “This is just a blind action, it’s frustration,” Westerveld adds.

The former goalkeeper believes that City should not get carried away. “It’s England, you’re being detained, so what? It happens everywhere.” Haaland also let his frustrations run free during the first half. The Norwegian striker got away without a card a number of times, but was still given a ticket in the 44th minute for a rash tackle on Vitaliy Mykolenko. That action could also have resulted in a red card, argues Westerveld. “He might still touch the ball a little bit, maybe the VAR will look at it. But a boy like that doesn’t need this, does he?”
