Griezmann gives Atlético Madrid the victory with a double against Girona

Atlético Madrid recorded a home win in LaLiga on Saturday afternoon. Coach Diego Simeone's team overcame an early deficit against Girona, partly thanks to two goals from Antoine Griezmann: 3-1. Atlético remains fourth, but is now closing in on Girona to within four points.

Simeone could not call on Memphis Depay, who suffered a muscle injury during training earlier this month. Daley Blind did start at Girona. This also applied to ex-PSV player Sávio.

The visitors got off to a flying start in the Wanda Metropolitano, as the lead was a fact within five minutes. It was a textbook attack. Girona built up from behind. Both teams seemed to be heading for the changing rooms with this score, but just before half time it was Ángel Correa who nodded the 2-1 against the ropes on a pass from Álvaro Morata.

Atlético had just come through the eye of the needle when defender Reinildo Mandava fouled Sávio. However, referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea wanted to hear nothing.
