Atlético Madrid recorded a home win in LaLiga on Saturday afternoon. Coach Diego Simeone's team overcame an early deficit against Girona, partly thanks to two goals from Antoine Griezmann: 3-1. Atlético remains fourth, but is now closing in on Girona to within four points.

Simeone could not call on Memphis Depay, who suffered a muscle injury during training earlier this month. Daley Blind did start at Girona. This also applied to ex-PSV player Sávio.

The visitors got off to a flying start in the Wanda Metropolitano, as the lead was a fact within five minutes. It was a textbook attack. Girona built up from behind. Yan Couto was found on the right and crossed tightly to Artem Dovbyk. The club's top scorer was then able to run the ball into an empty goal from two meters away: 0-1.

With more than half an hour on the clock, Atlético came alongside again. Referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea put the ball on the penalty spot after Mario Hermoso headed against Miguel Gutiérrez's hand. Griezmann stood behind the ball and convincingly shot the penalty into the right corner: 1-1.

Both teams seemed to be heading for the changing rooms with this score, but just before half time it was Ángel Correa who nodded the 2-1 against the ropes on a pass from Álvaro Morata.

Atlético had just come through the eye of the needle when defender Reinildo Mandava fouled Sávio. However, referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea wanted to hear nothing.

Griezmann put los Colchoneros took a bigger lead early in the second half. Girona midfielder Jhon Solís hit the ball completely wrong, after which the star player hit the ball hard from close range: 3-1. Nahuel Molina had an excellent chance to make it 4-1 after sloppy defending from the visitors, but the Argentinian shot wildly wide.
