Sunderland did themselves a particularly disservice in the Championship on Saturday afternoon. The PhD student seemed to be on his way to a victory in the home game against Queens Park Rangers in minute 86, but had to fish twice in the final minutes: 2-2. The second goal came from the head of goalkeeper Seny Dieng.

There seemed to be no problem for Sunderland, who took the lead after half an hour of play through Ross Stewart. The attacker was there like the chickens to work in a rebound from close range. The home side had the better of the game in the first half and deserved a 2-0 lead just before half-time. Ellis Simms got the ball with some luck in the course, dribbled into the enemy penalty area and finished in a controlled manner: 2-0.

Even after the break, it didn’t seem for a moment that Queens Park Rangers would step off the field with a result. The visitors did press, but only sparsely came up with finished opportunities. Until the final phase, when Ilias Chair completely brought the tension back into the duel. The visitors started to believe in it with the connecting goal and were paid for their work in the stoppage time. Goalkeeper Dieng decided to join in and headed a cross from Chair against the ropes: 2-2.

Due to the division of points, Sunderland fails to take over the lead in the Championship. The team of coach Alex Neil had four points left in the first two competition matches and had been the new leader with seven points. Now the PhD student is sixth with five points from three matches. Sunderland finished fifth in League One last season. In the play-offs at Wembley, Wycombe Wanderers won 2-0 under the watchful eye of 47,000 fans.
