AC Milan claimed the Italian league title on Sunday. In any case, Stefano Pioli’s team did not have to lose to Sassuolo on the final day in Serie A to stay ahead of fellow townsman Internazionale and did much more than that with a 0-3 victory. Goals from Olivier Giroud (twice) and Franck Kessié led to the final score after 36 minutes. With the nineteenth championship in club history, Milan is back at the top of Italian football for the first time since 2011. Internazionale did what it could by winning 3-0 against Sampdoria, but is left empty-handed in second place.

Sassuolo – AC Milan 0-3
Milan knew a draw was enough to secure the championship, but from the first whistle, the visitors played for a win. Olivier Giroud handed out the first pinprick of the match with a header, after which Sassuolo was overrun by a Milanese attack wave within three minutes. First Matheus Henrique lost the ball on the edge of his own box, after which Gian Marco Ferrari managed to stop Rafael Leão from scoring with an excellent tackle. The ensuing corner by Theo Hernández was then taken off the line by Maxime López. Sassuolo goalkeeper Andrea Consigli also saved his team not much later with an excellent save from behind.

After the many missed opportunities in a short time, Milan finally showed itself to be efficient. After Kaan Ayhan’s sloppy loss of the ball, Leão kept an overview and placed wide on Giroud, who shot through the legs of both Gian Marco Ferrari and Consigli: 0-1 With more than half an hour on the clock, the attacking duo found each other again. This time it was preceded by a gunshot from Ferrari, so that Leão could easily lay wide on Giroud: 0-2. Milan secured the championship before half-time and again Leão was at the base. The attacker pulled ahead and found Franck Kessié, who shot in dry: 0-3. The visitors were able to let go of the reins after the break. A substitute by Zlatan Ibrahimovic was inevitable. Pioli eventually awarded the forty-year-old Swede twenty minutes, in which he also seemed to make his contribution to the championship celebration. However, to the great regret of the Milan supporters, Ibrahimovic’s goal was canceled due to offside.

Inter Milan – Sampdoria 3-0
Simone Inzaghi opted for two changes at his team’s last chance. Denzel Dumfries returned to the starting line-up in the place of Matteo Darmian, while Joaquín Correa took over from Edin Dzeko. Because it started to rain goals shortly after kick-off at the great arch-rival, Inter knew pretty quickly that title prolongation was probably not in it. The first half was difficult for i Nerazzurrialthough Lautaro Martínez did get two good header chances.

Immediately after the break, Inter really started the engines and scored three goals within twelve minutes. Ivan Perisic, the man in great shape, was played low on the left in the penalty area and suddenly put the ball into the far corner: 1-0. Inter easily combined to the next goal, with Perisic giving in low, Hakan Çalhanoglu suddenly ready and Correa pulled the trigger: 2-0. The Argentinian had to do more work on the counter to make the next goal. Correa seemed to get stuck, but still turned free and shot in from fifteen meters: 3-0.
