Giovanni van Bronckhorst takes Roy Makaay to Rangers as an assistant coach, it reports General Newspaper. The new trainer of the Scottish top club opts for a Dutch technical staff. In addition to Makaay, he also chooses well-known names such as Yöri Boseloos and Arno Philips, who take on a role as video analyst and physical trainer respectively.

Van Bronckhorst was appointed trainer of Rangers on Thursday evening, where he succeeds Steven Gerrard. The latter was recently signed with Aston Villa in the Premier League. 46-year-old Van Bronckhorst has chosen Makaay as his right-hand man in Glasgow. The two know each other from their time together at Feyenoord and the Dutch national team. In addition, Makaay was already working as a trainer for Jong Feyenoord and as a striker trainer for the main force when Van Bronckhorst was head coach in Rotterdam.

Bosschaert and Philips are also well-known names for Van Bronckhorst, who will be on the training field in Scotland for the first time on Monday. The two assisted the former the Dutch international, good for 106 international matches, also at Guangzhou R&F in China. According to the newspaper, the name of Jean-Paul van Gastel was also on Van Bronckhorst’s list. Van Gastel was previously assistant to the head coach at Feyenoord and Guangzhou R&F, but is still under contract with the latter club until the turn of the year. Whether he will later join Rangers remains to be seen, according to reports.

At an earlier stage, former Rangers midfielder Gennaro Gattuso (clubless), Kjetil Knutsen (Bodö/Glimt) and Alexander Blessin (KV Oostende) already dropped out as candidates for the head coach in Glasgow. It will be Van Bronckhorst’s first job since his departure from Guangzhou R&F in December 2020. The former left back previously worked successfully as a trainer of Feyenoord for four seasons and became national champion in 2017 with the Rotterdam club. Van Bronckhorst also won the TOTO KNVB Cup twice and the Johan Cruijff Scale twice with Feyenoord.
