Lucas Digne continues his career at Aston Villa, the club announces through its official channels. According to transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano, Everton’s left back costs the Villans 27 million euros and he signs for four and a half years in Birmingham. Chelsea were also interested in Digne, but a concrete offer from West London was not forthcoming. The full-back from France is the second winter signing of manager Steven Gerrard after Philippe Coutinho, who was hired from Barcelona.

“When Lucas became available, we jumped at the opportunity to bring him to the club,” Gerrard said on the club’s website about his new recruit. “To add a player of this lineage and quality to our roster makes me and everyone at Aston Villa very excited.”
Digne was still at Everton until mid-2025. On behalf of the Toffees The left-back has made 127 games since his entrance in 2018. The Everton board deposited twenty million euros for the wing player more than three years ago and is now selling him on for a profit. Digne was from Barcelona at the time. In the past, Aston Villa’s brand new acquisition has played for Lille OSC, Paris Saint-Germain and AS Roma. There are 34 caps on behalf of France to his name.

The departure of Digne, who was also mentioned at Newcastle United, had been in the air for some time. The left-back hadn’t been used for some time by manager Rafael Benítez, who recently complained at a press conference about the left-footed fullback’s wish to leave. “It is very clear. I want to ask every fan and former player a question. What would Peter Reid (former Everton player, ed.) say to a player who does not want to be here? I have spoken with him a few times and knows what he thinks about it. So what do you expect from a manager when a player is only busy with a departure?” the Spanish coach wondered aloud.

Digne has reached a personal agreement with Aston Villa and is now on his way to Birmingham for the medical examination. If that does not cause any problems, he will sign a multi-year contract at Villa Park. Digne may already make his debut for Gerrard’s team on Saturday, which will be visited by Manchester United on that day. Last Monday, Aston Villa was eliminated in the third round of the FA Cup by the Red Devils.
