Also with the new trainer Domènec Torrent at the helm, Galatasaray continues to muddle in the Süper Lig. Turkey’s number thirteen took the lead twice on Sunday in a tumultuous game against Hatayspor, but lost 4-2. Patrick van Aanholt had a base place at Galatasaray and played a leading role by missing a penalty in the first half. In Torrent’s debut game, ten yellow and one red cards were handed out.

Before and during the match, the death of Ahmet Çalik, who died in a traffic accident at the beginning of this week, was commemorated. The defender played for Galatasaray between 2017 and 2020. In the sixth minute, after his old shirt number, his photo was shown on the big screen, reserve players showed a shirt of Çalik, supporters applauded en masse and a balloon was released. Even after the opening goal, the former Turkey international was honored by the Galatasaray players.

The goal fell halfway through the first half; Van Aanholt’s input was very valuable. During a swift attack he was served on the left flank before sending a sharp, low cross to the far post. There Emre Kilinç was ready to finish: 0-1. Galatasaray was awarded a penalty not much later because Dylan Saint-Louis hit the ball out of the penalty area with an outstretched arm. Van Aanholt’s low bet missed the right direction, allowing keeper Abdullah Yigiter to save.

In minute 43, Hatayspor managed to use a penalty itself. After contact between Alpaslan Öztürk and Mohammed Kamara and the intervention of the VAR, Mame Diouf was allowed to moor from eleven meters and his effort was a lot more convincing than that of Van Aanholt. Six minutes were added to the first half on paper and eight minutes in practice. This was partly due to the penalty moments and the many yellow cards (seven in the first half). Shortly before half time, Kerem placed Aktürkoglu beautifully over the wall and into the left corner.

In the second half, a goal by Kamara was disallowed due to an offside by Saint-Louis in the attack, but Hatayspor still made it 2-2. Saint-Louis quickly turned away from his guard, brought the ball in front of the goal and saw Kamara make the decisive contact. Galatasaray then chased the lead again. After Van Aanholt’s preparatory work, Alexandru Cicaldau tapped the ball from close range but just wide. In the end, however, it was Hatayspor that took the game to itself. Saba Lobzhanidze scored from a quick counterattack. Taylan Antalyali was then shown a red card for headbutting towards Rúben Ribeiro, and Lobzhanidze also made it 4-2 against ten men.
