Frenkie de Jong is still following the Eredivisie closely and has also seen that Ajax has a difficult season. He says this in conversation with the NOS. The team from Amsterdam has to pull out all the stops to finish third at all, and that goes to the heart of the former player, who became champion with Barcelona last week. De Jong is optimistic about next season.

Joep Schreuder, reporter of the NOS, went to visit Spain and asked De Jong whether he still follows the Eredivisie. “Yes, certainly. I do see a lot of Ajax matches and if I can, I often watch it live. Whether that is with pain in the heart? It is a lesser season now, but you always have that. There many things have happened, of course. Trainer gone, technical director gone, then it is always restless at a club. “

As for next season, the playmaker from Arkel, who won the double with Ajax in the 2018/19 season and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League, is keeping his spirits up. A mediocre year does not necessarily mean that the retired national champion is no longer at the top of the Netherlands. “Of course this season was very disappointing, but it could all be different next year”, De Jong also knows.

De Jong does not miss playing football in the Eredivisie. He likes life in Barcelona very much and Dutch food is not something the Oranje-international thinks about every day. When asked by Schreuder whether De Jong misses eating a licorice, he replies with a laugh ‘no’. “I certainly miss family and friends in the Netherlands, and of course also some small things. Life here is fantastic, so apart from family and friends I don’t really miss anything.”
