Olympique Marseille has reported to Ajax for Nicolás Tagliafico, various French media report, including RMC Thursday night. The French top club would like to hire the 29-year-old left back on a rental basis and negotiate an option to buy from the team from Amsterdam. Possibly the Argentine trainer of L’OM, Jorge Sampaoli, will play an important role in Tagliafico’s eventual transfer.

According to French reports, Olympique Marseille has already contacted Ajax. The plan is for Tagliafico to leave immediately for the French port. It is also hoped to negotiate a purchase option. Although Sampaoli, Argentina national team coach between June 2017 and July 2018, would like to be reunited with the left-back, writes RMC that it may be a difficult job to loosen Tagliafico at Ajax.

Ajax would not be willing to just let Tagliafico go, as there is a full football calendar coming up and the club will already compete against Benfica in the Champions League at the end of February. Still, Sampaoli wants to give Ajax a try, as he has reportedly kept excellent contact with Tagliafico after the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Earlier on Thursday, Ajax watcher Johan Inan spoke in the AD Football Podcast already talking about the future of Tagliafico.

“I think Tagliafico will finish the season at Ajax. But you don’t know how things will go in the last days of the transfer window. It may just be that a very nice club will come for Tagliafico and that Ajax can hardly stop him. Ajax can say that they must have a back-up, because they are not very good at left backs,” said Inan. Ten Hag has opted for Daley Blind in the left back position this season. Tagliafico played nine games in the Eredivisie this season, of which only twice as a starting player.
