The disturbances during the match between OGC Nice and Olympique Marseille get a very annoying tail for one supporter. Tony C., who attacked Dimitri Payet during the night in question at the end of August, has been sentenced to prison. The French public prosecutor has sentenced the Nice supporter to a prison sentence of one year, of which six months suspended. The final decision in this case will be made next week.

Things went horribly wrong on August 22 when Marseille players clashed with Nice supporters. One of the fans of the home team went so crazy that he sought physical contact with Payet. He explained in court on Wednesday how it could have come to this. “When I saw Payet throwing stuff at the audience, my eyes went black,” explained Tony C. “I hope not to be treated as an example.”

The suspect emphasized that he is not a hooligan. “I haven’t done anything wrong in 28 years, I’m not a hooligan.” Despite the soothing words, the public prosecutor showed little compassion and was sentenced to one year in prison, of which six months were suspended. Tony C. also runs the risk of getting a stadium ban for the next five years. “Tony C. has ruined the festive mood in football. He is a bad example for the football fan,” said the officer.

Marseille refused to finish the game after the interruption, after which it was later decided that the remainder of the game should be played on neutral ground. Nice also has to play three games without an audience. Last weekend went awry for the second time in Ligue 1, as fans of RC Lens faced off with supporters from visiting Nice. The game was temporarily suspended, but could be resumed later. Stewards managed to avoid a real confrontation.
