Latest update:

These are hectic times for Marijn Beukers and Kelvin de Lang. The director of football and the head scout/acting technical manager of Ajax stepped in at a time of administrative and sporting crisis, and also saw their valued colleague Alex Kroes withdraw with a suspension. Yet the duo manages to cling to positive points. “We have quite a nice skeleton,” Beuker said in conversation with The Telegraph.

Due to the suspension of Kroes – the general manager was punished for a questionable share purchase – the shaping of 'the new Ajax' is mainly the responsibility of Beukers and De Lang. However, the duo already sees the base walking around in Amsterdam.

“With Ramaj, Hato, Taylor and Brobbey you really have a nice block,” says Beuker. “There must be stability in the group and then you will not get twelve players again.”

With the latter, the football director refers to last transfer summer. Sven Mislintat, who has since been fired, threw millions into this, but the payoff was limited.

Of all the purchases, only Ramaj really stands out. The German is now part of 'the skeleton' that Ajax would like to build on.

Beukers says he sat with the entire skeleton and expressed his wish to let them stay. De Lang has something to add to this.

“Hato, Brobbey and Taylor are also boys from our own training. As far as we are concerned, a departure is in principle non-negotiable,” said the head scout and temporary technical manager.

'At least compete for a place in the Champions League'

Beuker and De Lang acknowledge that there is still a lot to do to allow Ajax to compete for the national title again. In any case, the latter is keeping a close eye on things.

“I think that as Ajax we should aim for the top spot every season. If that comes too early for next year, we should at least ensure that we compete for a place in the Champions League,” said De Lang.
